My family contains four sweet special people
We go to Church under the big tall steeple
Debra Anne is my kind sweet mother
Mathew Thomas is my annoying big brother
Brian Thomas is my wonderful father
Kristina Elizabeth is their loving daughter
But we each are different in many ways
More and more every step of the way
My mother has shadowy hair that’s quite dim
She has a scalded body which covers her skin
With a shade of emerald colored eyes
From the fire smoke she almost died
My brother was born the 27th of May
But all he did was whine and whimper all day
When he was born there he lay quite small
Most of all he loved to play with his blue bouncy ball
Finally my father which I loved the best
From just all the rest
I don’t get to see him all that much
Because he’s so far away to touch
Even though my father’s far away
We get closer and closer every day
I tell him I love and miss him every night
Even though he’s out of sight
I wrote this poem about my family when I was in the fourth grade. It was after my mom had been the victim of a household fire that had permanently changed all of our lives including my perception of her due to her severe scarring. My dad was forced to work on the road to support my family financially and everything in my family felt different and scary. Our lives were forever changed.
